American Legion Oratorical Contest

The American Legion Oratorical Contest, known as “A Constitutional Speech Contest,” is a premier public speaking competition designed to deepen high school students' understanding of the U.S. Constitution and its application in American society. The contest offers substantial scholarships and serves as a platform for students to develop leadership and communication skills.


๐ŸŽฏ Contest Overview

  • Purpose: To foster a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the U.S. Constitution among high school students. 

  • Eligibility: Open to U.S. citizens or lawful residents under the age of 20 who are enrolled in high school or junior high school (grades 9–12). 

  • Competition Levels:

    1. Post Level: Local American Legion posts host initial contests.

    2. District Level: Winners from local contests advance to district competitions.

    3. Department (State) Level: Statewide contests determine the state representative.

    4. National Finals: Top state winners compete nationally.

  • Prepared Oration: An 8–10 minute speech on a topic related to the U.S. Constitution, emphasizing citizens' duties and obligations.

  • Assigned Topic: A 3–5 minute speech on a randomly selected topic from a list provided by The American Legion.

  • Rules:

    • No notes, props, or electronic aids allowed during the speech.

    • Speeches must be delivered in English.

    • Quotations longer than 10 words must be cited.

    • Singing is prohibited.

  • National Finals:

    • 1st Place: $25,000

    • 2nd Place: $22,500

    • 3rd Place: $20,000

    • 1st Place: $5,000

    • 2nd Place: $3,500

    • 3rd Place: $2,500
