The Gates Scholarship

The Gates Scholarship is a highly selective, last-dollar scholarship funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It aims to support outstanding, Pell-eligible minority high school seniors in the United States who demonstrate exceptional leadership potential and academic excellence.

🎓 Eligibility Criteria

To apply for The Gates Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be a high school senior.

  • Be from at least one of the following ethnicities: African-American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian & Pacific Islander American, and/or Hispanic American.

  • Be Pell-eligible (i.e., demonstrate significant financial need as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA).

  • Be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident.

  • Have a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale.

  • Plan to enroll full-time in a four-year degree program at an accredited, not-for-profit, private or public U.S. college or university.

  • For American Indian/Alaska Native applicants, proof of tribal enrollment is required

💰 Scholarship Benefits

The Gates Scholarship provides funding for the full cost of attendance that is not already covered by other financial aid and the Student Aid Index (SAI), as determined by the FAFSA or the methodology used by the student's college or university. This includes tuition, fees, room, board, books, and transportation, and may include other personal costs.

  • Application Opens: July 15, 2024

  • Application Deadline: September 15, 2024

  • Semifinalist Phase: December 2024 – January 2025

  • Finalist Interviews: March 2025

  • Recipient Selection: April 2025

  • Awards Distributed: July–September 2025 

📝 Application Process

  1. Create a Profile: Visit The Gates Scholarship website to create a student profile.

  2. Complete the Qualifying Questionnaire: Submit the Gates Qualifying Questionnaire to determine initial eligibility.

  3. Full Application: If selected as a semifinalist, complete the full application, which includes:

    • Personal statement

    • Letters of recommendation

    • High school transcript

    • FAFSA confirmation

  4. Interviews: Finalists will be invited for interviews in March 2025.

  5. Notification: Recipients will be notified in April 2025.
