Horatio Alger Scholarship

The Horatio Alger Association offers several scholarship programs aimed at assisting students who have faced and overcome significant personal challenges. These scholarships are designed to support individuals pursuing higher education, particularly those with financial need and a demonstrated commitment to their academic and career goals.

1. National Scholarship Program

  • Award: $25,000

  • Eligibility:

    • High school juniors (Class of 2025), seniors (Class of 2024), or current college students planning to pursue a bachelor's degree.

    • Demonstrate financial need (adjusted gross family income of $65,000 or lower).

    • Involved in co-curricular and community service activities.

    • Display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity.

    • Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0.

    • Be a U.S. citizen.

  • Application Period: December 1 – March 1

2. State Scholarships

  • Award: $10,000

  • Eligibility:

    • High school juniors in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

    • Demonstrate financial need (adjusted gross family income of $55,000 or lower).

    • Involved in co-curricular and community service activities.

    • Display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity.

    • Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0.

    • Be a U.S. citizen.

  • Application Period: Opens December 1

3. Career & Technical Education (CTE) Scholarships

  • Award: $2,500

  • Eligibility:

    • High school seniors or non-traditional students planning to attend a not-for-profit community college or trade/vocational school.

    • Enroll in an associate’s degree, certificate, or diploma program by September that will lead to employment.

    • Demonstrate financial need (household income of $65,000 or less).

    • Be under the age of 35.

    • Be a U.S. citizen.

  • Application Period: March 15 – June 15

4. Graduate Scholarships

  • Eligibility:

    • Horatio Alger Scholars who have completed a bachelor’s degree or higher and plan to pursue a master’s, Ph.D., or postdoctoral degree.

  • Application Period: September 1 – November 1

5. Internship Stipend Program

  • Award: Up to $5,000

  • Eligibility:

    • Horatio Alger Scholars in good standing.

    • First-year college/university students, sophomores, juniors, or graduating seniors.

    • Minimum GPA of 2.7.

    • Participating in an unpaid or underpaid internship in their chosen field.

  • Application Period: March 1 – April 15

  1. Determine Eligibility: Review the specific eligibility criteria for each scholarship program.

  2. Prepare Documents:

    • High school transcript (including fall grades).

    • Income verification (e.g., IRS tax transcript).

    • Counselor Certification Form.

    • Support Form from an adult over 21 familiar with your adversities.

  3. Complete Application: Fill out the online application for the desired scholarship program.

  4. Submit Application: Ensure all required documents are uploaded and submitted by the application deadline
